Episode 24: The Pilot Part II

Episode #64; 4:24

Our Summary

Rehearsals of the pilot begin. Russell goes off the deep end, literally, with LD. Morty's wallet is found in Jerry's couch, Elaine was wrong about Monk's, it was his daughters that were working there. Crazy Joe tries to kill Jerry, and characters from the past season comment on The Pilot. It ends up getting cancelled by the new head honcho at NBC, who has become the new head b/c of what happened to Russell, which was Elaine's fault.

Our Commentary

We start this ep off with a "Last Week on Seinfeld", even though parts of it weren't on last week. Beautiful stuff with George finding out the tests were negative, and then finding out that negative is good. Excellent and classic George with his obsession of finding out what happened to the raisins, Kramer's enema stuff, and Crazy Joe Divola's jump off of the seats. But most of all, the best part of this ep is The Pilot and all of the previous characters commenting on it. The Pilot itself is hilarious, with some great jokes and perfect imitations of George, Elaine, and Kramer, although the guy playing Jerry can use a bit of work. Actually, he was perfect too. Also, I love Elaine as a blonde, and LD at his best, worthy of being in CYE, with his whole Greenpeace shtick at the end with Russell. Overall, a great ep.

Now as to the meaning and significance of this episode within Season 4. The entire season, from the first episode, has been leading to this season finale of 4:24 The Pilot Part 2. Every episode, from ones with Susan, the exec from NBC, to the ones actually having to do with The Pilot, to all of the characters in eps that had nothing to do with The Pilot, but who returned to pay their respects to Season 4, by commenting on The Pilot, is simply brilliant. In classic and excellent LD fashion, we get links up the wazoo/wing wang. As mentioned in previous commentaries, we have the overarching theme of The Pilot throughout Season 4, Susan throughout Seinfeld itself, as well as Season 4, the jacket, in this episode specifically, the wallet, and everything else that LD threw in to this beautiful season.

This season was one of the greats, better than the last 3. 8 out of 24 episodes, compared to 0 out of 5 episodes in Season 1, 1 out of 12 in Season 2, and 8 out of 23 episodes in Season 3, made the Top 50. This is a testament to its greatness. LD, LC, JS, JA, JLD, MR, WK, PB, KP, SM, BB, PC, and HS all did excellent jobs writing and acting in these hilarious episodes of Seinfeld. Props all around to all who injected a bit of joy and comedy into the bloodstream of Season 4. That said, let us enter Season 5 together in joy and harmony, b/c although Season 4 did have 9 out of 24 episodes making the Top 50, Season 5 has 13 out of 22, that's more than half the season for those who can't count. See you there friend of friends.

Adam - A great episode, a perfect ending to a great season. All of the holes were filled in. Return of many great 4th Season characters. It brought back some great memories. Overall, great episode, great season. 5 out of 24, compared to 0 out of 5 episodes in Season 1, 0 out of 12 in Season 2, and 6 out of 23 episodes in Season3, made the Top 50.
