Episode 17: The English Patient

Episode #151; 8:17

Our Summary

George is mistaken for a beautiful woman's boyfriend, Neal, so George engages on a quest to find this Neal, until Jerry tells him that he out-Neiled Neil. Elaine watches The English Patient with her beau, but hates it and must watch it again with Peterman who insists that she watch it after she lies to him by saying that she never saw it. She must go to Tunisia in order to keep her job. Jerry goes down to Florida and gets into a macho headgame with a character named Izzy Mandelbaum, played by the comic great, Lloyd Bridges, as well as his son and father This leads to their crepe restaurant on the verge of going out of business, but is temporarily saved by Kramer, because Kramer brough in some Domican human beings, whom he though were Cuban human beings, whom Jerry thought were Cuban cigars. The deal goes sour with them making Cuban cigars b/c they are Dominicans, but since they can roll cigars, they can roll crepes. However, since they are Dominicans and not Cubans, they roll them too tightly and the crepes burn everyone's faces, including Neal's, causing the gal to care for him instead of George and thus causing George to pull the plug on Neal.

Our Commentary

I expected this ep to be in the Top 5, but it's only in the Top 50. That said, the ep is still hilarious with the whole thing of George out-Neiling Neil, not knowing that Danielle wants him more than anything in the world, the whole thing with the Mandelbaums, Elaine hating The English Patient, Mr. Peanut, macho head games, Elaine's married friends knowing Blaine and being friends with him, the #1 shirt, and everything else with those plot lines. And then we get to Kramer and the Cubans, with Jerry and Earl Haffler and the Magic Pan restaurant. It is stimply hilarious. Hilarious with Kramer not getting the problem with him importing Cuban human beings, but knowing that Cuban cigars are problematic, hot and spicy, Jerry's place, and not being able to think of a color for his shirt, we talking about cigars or people, the smell, texture, aroma, refined palate, any more Cuban Castro would smoke them himself, Dominicans in Cuban wrappers, Dennis Castro, uhh, Duane, a Kramer as Daryn, El Presidente!, rolling a double corona, a cigar made out of Bizquick, that's why you need real Cubans, and esploited my your Magic Pan restaurants. Overall, solidly hilarious episode, well deserved of the Top 50. Adam - Jared summed it up beautifully in his commentary and I'll just add a little tidbit. The fact that people don't believe that Jerry and the gang don't deserve to get thrown in jail takes a most unappealing turn in this episode as it is clear to us that at least George does belong in jail b/c he pulls the plug on Neil. That's first degree manslaughter. (Actually, having now taken Criminal Law, it is murder.) But other than that, the episode was quite funny. I enjoyed it. That said, it only makes the Top 50, but let us rejoice and welcome in, which I believe, but I have been wrong before, will be my favorite episode of all time, in 2 episodes, 8:19 The Yada Yada.
