The character of Ruthie was introduced in 4:1 The Trip Part 1 as the cashier who alternates with other cashiers at Monk's. It wasn't until 7:10 The Gum, when she was finally talked about by Jerry and George, that she was given some dialogue as well as becoming a meaningful character, and was credited as such, as Cashier. She was also credited again in 8:1 The Foundation, as Ruthie. Finally, they let her have one more speaking part in 9:5 The Junk Mail, albeit one word. What actress could portray such a pivotal yet unimportant character as Ruthie Cohen? In typical LD fashion, Ruth Cohen was the only one for the job.
Ruthie is a tireless worker who basically lives in Monk's. She lets people use her phone, doesn't open the cash register unless you buy something, has a four door slick blueish car, and rides horses badly in Central Park.
One thing can be said about Ruthie C: even if you claim short over and over, she'll still tell you if your car is on fire and wish you a Merry Xmas to boot.
